Usually, but not always.
At least not when it comes to saving crazy money on produce. I just paid $19.50 for all of this:
And next time it'll only cost $16.50. That's about $50 worth of produce there!! I got corn, avocados, kiwis, tomatoes, cucumbers, apples, oranges, lettuce, spinach, oranges, a cantaloupe, and red onions. (I also had the option of buying bread-- at similarly great prices)
Crazy! Crazy, I tell you!
And because I like you so much, I'll share my secret: it's a food co-op called Bountiful Baskets.
You pay your contribution ($19.50 your first time, and $16.50 after that) by Wednesday night, and then on Saturday morning you show up at your pick up point and get your produce. It's very well organized and totally awesome. They're able to get such insanely low prices because they have $0 overhead-- it's all run by volunteers.
Here's the catch: It's not available everywhere. Bountiful Baskets operates only in Arizona, Utah, Idaho and Washington-- check their website for pick up points.

crazy is the produce any good? I was at macey's yesterday and they just didn't have any good cantelopes,.. maybe those are out of season now.
pickup point,.. it sounds so much like a secret op rendezvous to purchase something on the black market. lol.
Everything is ALWAYS in season somewhere in the world - but how do these guys obtain it with zero overhead. I hope it's nothing that is rejected, tainted or perhaps stolen. Steph, Steph, Steph . . . .
JUST KIDDING! I think it sounds totally awesome & I will check out the website for a 'pick up point' near me!
Thanks Steph! I checked out the website and there is a pick-up point near my house. I'm sold! Going to try it out this week.
Do I need to bring my own basket??
Never mind. I just read that I have to bring my own basket.
Thanks for posting about this Steph. A few years ago I looked into a different co-op here in Utah County, but I didn't find it to be THAT great of a deal and you had to commit to being part of it for several months (I think one season) at a time. I will definitely look into this.
The produce has been wonderful-- as good as I've gotten anywhere else. (We just cut into the cantaloupe this morning Theresa and it was PERFECT) Everything has been really really good.
There is one up here in Idaho Falls. I'm going to try it on Saturday. Thanks for the info!!
Just thinking about you and wanted to check in on the good ol' blog. We did a CSA out here last year and loved it, but it was waaaay more expensive than the cost of your loot. And it's all grown so close by! Ah...welcome to CA.
Thanks for the info! I'm starting Bountiful Baskets this week!
I'm so excited!
