Even though the ultrasound showed baby girl, we're still in a bit of denial. After not even daring to hope for a girl for so long, our recent news hardly seems possible. Maybe thinking more seriously about names will help the reality of a daughter sink in?
So far, when people have asked us about prospective names they've been greeted with our blank stares and shoulder shrugs-- not because we're being secretive or tight-lipped on the subject, but just because we haven't really thought about it for reals.
We still may reserve the right to wait until after little Miss Hadfield arrives to finalize the name choice, but here's a list of a few we've been considering lately (meaning, the ones that I found today while perusing the SSA name index's most popular girl names from 1890 to 1940):
Tier I (most likely)*
Ella
Jane
Lucy
Margaret (Maggie)
Sally
Tier 2 (Steph likes, Joe could tolerate)
Ruth
Stella
Evelyn
Clara
Names that absolutely will not grace our baby girl's birth certificate**:
Gladell
Delightra
Blondeen
Faundaree
RaDawn
*Names are in no particular order of importance within their tiers.
**These real names came from the Utah Baby Namer website-- which I highly recommend if you're in need of a good laugh.

One name that I don't get to use that I really like suggested by my best friend Stacey is Claire. You might consider it. I really like it. :) I also really like your tier 1 list. :)
Also I like the name ella and most people I've seen use it by itself. My cousin on the other hand named her baby Ellalyn and calls her Baby Ella for short. I think it would be neat to use Ella as the short form of something...ie give your daughter a longer name and shorten to ella for everyday use like my cousin did. I'm pretty sure you're not thinking of going that route but if you are I always thought it would be cool to name a girl Eloise or Elouise and she could go by Ella for short. If I was going to do this I'd probably go with the Eloise spelling since it sounds more like ella. :)
Steph, I LOVE LOVE the names. I have fought with Jon forever on the name Stella, and yet it appears this is a battle I will not win.
ooh! I love Stella too! :)
Jessie: it looks like you can have Evelyn-- I don't think Joe will go for it unless something crazy changes his mind. I'm crossing my fingers that you can use it because it's such an unbelievably sweet name. Wouldn't Evie be the perfect nickname for a little girl?
Theresa: Ellalyn is cute, but it reminds me too much of the midwestern phenomenon of always calling people by their first AND second names: Billie Jo, Jim Bob, etc. (those are both real people that I've met in person by the way). I think if we go with Ella, we'll let the name stand on it's own. On the other hand, I'd love to name a daughter Eleanor (after my favorite Jane Austen character) and call her Ella or Ellie, but Joe would NEVER go for that.
Megan: Stella IS wonderful, isn't it? I think Stella Ward sounds perfect. Maybe you should just make sure that Jon is out of the room when you have to fill out the birth certificate paper work so you can name her Stella and surprise him! (totally kidding)
yeah. I figured you guys are less for shortened names where the real name is longer. :)
keep us posted on the front runners as you narrow or expand the list a bit more. :)
Whatever happened to Hazel? I thought that's what you were going to name Jack when you though he was a girl. I've always thought that name is pretty.
I'm sure Angie wouldn't mind sharing if that's what you want to name her. :) they could be twinners a few years apart.
Blondeen???? Seriously? Well then. I guess there is something for everyone.
I love the name Ella -- my great grandmother's name was Ella Frieda. I love that name, but I couldn't win the Frieda battle with my spouse. Rats. And we already had an Elle in the family. But I love all of the other names. I also LOVE Stella. It is one of my favorite girl names. And Jane. I love that too. Actually I like all of them so far (except for that third list.) I'm sure no matter what, she is going to have a beautiful name and she is sure to be absolutely delicious! I can't wait!
Funny last tier. I remember you liked Jane and Maggie when you were pregnant with Jack. Didn't you also like Hazel? I think that's an awesome name! ;)
Good luck with the name game. I opened that baby name link and can't wait to peruse!
Hi - Nana here...Maggie (Margaret) and Clara are both great grandmothers. Clara Emily Chadderton Lee, and Margaret Allred Neilson Griffiths. Both a lot to live up to... One was a mid-wife and one lived with us
Make that great great great grandmothers (of little Miss Hadfield).
Isn't one of those GGG Grandma's the one that supposedly removed her own tonsils?
Clara removed her own tonsils. She lived through the block from a Doctor's house/office, and she was always getting tonsillitis. Her folks didn't have the money to pay for the surgery so she had the doctors daughter sneak her into the office when the dad was not there. They took the long surgical scissors and Clara claimed to have clipped out her own tonsils. ( She lived to be 100 years old, and Mom says that the story was true). Clara was the one who lived with us for a time.
Here is my 2 cents... I love Jane spelled Jayne. And another girl name I love is Brielle (its short from Gabrielle) TJ and I never cold agree on any girl names.
Ella and Evelyn are my favorites. I hope you're able to win Joe over to Evelyn. It also has some nice potential nicknames- perhaps Eve or Eva? Serge's great Aunt and Uncle had a somewhat heated dispute about the name of their daughter. The husband backed off and the wife thought she had won the argument, but then at the baby blessing he blessed the baby with the name he had favored, and she stood up in the middle of sacrament meeting and yelled "NOOO!"
