Haiku to Popsicles

my frozen heaven
it's ninety-five fahrenheit
i want nothing else

It. Is. Hot. Temps here have been in the mid nineties all week (and we're without central air, mind you). Which means that not much has been happening with us except for mass consumption of popsicles, multiple trips to the library (and other random, but blissfully cool places), and a whole lot of laying around doing nothing. Things improved greatly yesterday when I figured out a very complicated system of using no less than 6 fans and a little window air conditioner to keep our house in a comfortable temperature range. I deserve some kind of honorary engineering degree or something.

Trouble is, turning on the stove will heat up the house faster than you can say fahrenheit, in spite of all my careful fan placement. And my family is getting sick of cold sandwiches. Which means that I'm in quite desperate need of some fabulous recipes for hot weather food. You know, stuff you can cook on the grill (which we do have, although we're out of "grill gas", as Lincoln says), or stuff you don't have to cook at all... I happen to know for a fact that there are some amazing cooks in my readership (you know who you are), so please share some ideas. I'm prepared to offer a prize to whomever sends in the best recipe (as judged by them crazy Hadfields), which, ironically, might turn out to be something warm and handknitted (you'll thank me come Fall).

Shishkabobs. red/green peppers, onions, pineapple, chicken, and or beef, potatoes threaded on a shishkabob skewer and grilled on the grill outside. Yum. make 2-3 shishkabobs per person depending on appetite and eat them as the meat gets done on each one. for healthier appetites, supplement with some fresh grilled chicken, watermelon, and salad.

It's the perfect interactive meal because each person makes their own shishkabob as a fun entertaining activity then waits for theirs to be done while playing on the toys at the park or something.

Here, here! I am entering this contest in good faith that Stephanie will make good on her prize, unlike Joe and the dream journal. (Joking, kind of, Joe.) ;)

Teriyaki Burgers

Make teriyaki sauce, and put the ground beef in it before forming patties. You will probably also want to add an egg to the sauce to make the meat hold together really well, although we never do.

Make the burgers on the grill, and serve with pineapple slices and barbeque sauce instead of the traditional fixin's. So delish.

Sauce:
3/4 c. soy sauce
1/4 c. water
1/4 c. sugar
1 tsp. ground ginger
3-4 dashes garlic powder

Todd and I usually half the sauce recipe for just him and me, but you may want the full amount with all the boys you are feeding.

(This sauce came first for teriyaki chicken - just brown the chicken, simmer the sauce with the meat for a while, and serve over rice. Also so delish, but not a no-stove meal. Not entered in the contest. Just a bonus.)
